CDL training and ELDT explained

Since February 7, 2022, FMCSA's Entry-Level Driver Training rules require many new commercial drivers to finish training with a registered provider before taking the CDL skills or knowledge test.

Who must complete ELDT

According to FMCSA, ELDT applies to anyone seeking a Class A or Class B CDL for the first time, upgrading a Class B CDL to Class A, or obtaining a school bus (S), passenger (P) or hazardous materials (H) endorsement for the first time. FMCSA lists exceptions on the Training Provider Registry.

How it works

  1. Pick a provider listed in the registry for the class and endorsement you need.
  2. Complete the theory (classroom) portion and, for Class A or B, behind-the-wheel training on a range and public road.
  3. The provider submits your completion to the registry. Your state licensing agency checks it electronically before you test.

Finding a school

Our CDL school directory lists 2,958 active, public, in-person registry locations teaching Class A or Class B, by state and city.

What to ask before paying

Truckers also need a DOT medical exam from a certified examiner on the FMCSA National Registry.
